In 1997-8, we lived for a few months in Ashhurst, which
is very near to this spectacular gorge. It is several kilometers long, and
is the only route from Manawatu to the region south of the Ruahine mountain
range, so a road (on the right) and the railway line (left) cling to its
steep slopes. Sometimes both routes are washed out when there has been heavy
rain. There is a walking track which traverses the higher levels of the
gorge, from one end to the other - and yes, I have walked it, but in two
instalments, as you need a vehicle to deliver you to the one end and one to
pick you up from the other if you want to walk the whole track in one go. |
